Fraternity Community Hosts Volleyball Tournament

February 18, 2014

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The fraternity community at the University of Mount Union hosted a volleyball tournament to benefit the Alliance Food Pantry on Sunday. The four fraternities – Alpha Tau Omega, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Phi Kappa Tau and Sigma Nu – participated with some excellent coaching from the Women’s Volleyball team.

Tournament coordinator Bradley Kress, a senior member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon from Louisville, OH, came up with the idea based upon the sororities’ long-standing tradition of playing Football FrenXi as a chapter philanthropy event. He found that it was a great way to benefit an agency while also building camaraderie between the fraternity chapters.

“We have not had the chance to work together as a fraternity community in such a way to benefit a philanthropy, so I tried to look for a new way in which to do so,” Kress said. “I wanted to find a way to invite friends and families to also support us in this endeavor. I felt that volleyball was a great way to include as many members of our community as I could.”

The tournament took place on campus in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex Sweeny Auxiliary Gymnasium. The winner of the tournament was Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and they have “bragging rights” for the coming year.

“We hope to make this an annual event for years to come” Kress said. “I hope that more friends and families are able to join us.”

The fraternities raised approximately $200 and several pounds of food, all of which will be donated this week.

The Alliance Food Pantry was founded in 2010 and is one major source of food for those with hunger needs in the Alliance area.  Located in downtown Alliance, the Alliance Food Pantry is a “choice” pantry that provides its clients the ability to select what food items they’d like from those available. According to their website, in 2013, 2,624 families visited the pantry a total of 18,154 times. For more information on the Alliance Food Pantry, please visit www.alliancecommunitypantry.org.
