Girls and Women in Sports Day Activities Held
April 08, 2010
The Alliance Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Lands, the local Girl Scouts, Mount Union College and the Alliance YWCA teamed up to sponsor a "Girls and Women in Sports Day," held at the College in the Peterson Fieldhouse on Saturday, February 8.
Girls from local schools were invited to sign up for the event. Volunteers from the Mount Union College women's athletic teams, organized by Sandy Douglas, head volleyball and softball coach and senior women's administrator for athletics at the College, worked at several "stations" where the girls participated in various sports. There were stations for golf, basketball, tennis, and volleyball, as well as several other sports.
The theme of the Sports Day was "Succeed in Sports, Lead in Life." The purpose of the event, according to Jennifer Broome, director of service learning and community service at Mount Union, is to encourage girls to become involved in sports. "Girls and Women in Sports Day" is a national event.
