Greek Awards Held at Mount Union

The 17th Annual Mount Union Greek Awards, presented by the Order of Omega was held on Sunday, March 21 at 7 p.m. in the Mount Union Theatre. The purpose of the Greek Awards program is to provide recognition to outstanding individuals and organizations in different areas of achievement for their accomplishments throughout the 2009 year.
Scholastic Achievement Awards
Highest Chapter Grade Point Average – Alpha Xi Delta and Alpha Tau Omega
Highest New Member Class GPA – Alpha Delta Pi and Alpha Tau Omega
Most Improved GPA – Alpha Chi Omega and Alpha Tau Omega
Chapter of Excellence Awards
The Chapter of Excellence Awards represent eight separate areas of assessment. The overall designation of Chapter of Excellence is granted to those chapters submitting an award application in all eight areas of assessment for consideration (chapter need not be the individual award recipient). In addition, to qualify for the Chapter of Excellence designation, a fraternity or sorority must meet or exceed the qualifications required during the period of assessment for which the award is presented. The period of assessment for the Chapter of Excellence is January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009.

Brotherhood & Sisterhood Awards: Each one of Mount Union's fraternity and sorority organization recognizes an individual member for his or her strong demonstration of the meaning of brotherhood or sisterhood.

Outstanding Faculty Member: This award is presented to one member of the Mount Union College faculty, staff or administration who exhibits outstanding and continued service to the fraternity and sorority community.

Advisor of the Year: This award is presented to one advisor (faculty, chapter and/or advisory board member) who exhibits an outstanding commitment to his or her chapter and to their Greek Community as a whole.
Roy Clunk, ’77, chapter advisor for Phi Kappa Tau
Outstanding Governing Board Officer: This award recognizes one governing board officer from each council (IFC and Panhellenic) for his or her leadership in working and representing their chapter on the Interfraternity or Panhellenic Council throughout the term of their office. Nominees upheld their position to the best of their ability and best represented the entire Greek community while doing so.
Abby Honaker (junior English: literature major from Fresno, OH) and George W. Kiraly, Jr. (senior communication major from McDonald, OH)
Fraternal Values: This award, newly revised for 2009, is presented to one person in the Mount Union community for exceptional and outstanding demonstration of the principles and ideals of interfraternal spirit. The nominees may be undergraduate members, administrators, advisors (faculty, chapter or advisory board members) or a friend of the Mount Union fraternity/sorority community. Their dedication must be noteworthy and observable by all chapters on campus. Any number of nominees may apply for this particular award. This award is selected by the Order of Omega membership.
Kyle J. Brown (senior information systems major from Garrettsville, OH) of Sigma Alpha Epsilon
Outstanding Chapter President: This award recognizes one chapter president of a fraternity and one chapter president of a sorority for his and her leadership in guiding their organization throughout the term of their presidency.
Sarah S. Cleveland (senior exercise science major from Westlake, OH) of Alpha Chi Omega
Jesse J. Shamp (senior political science major of Monaca, PA) of Sigma Alpha Epsilon
Outstanding Senior Sorority Woman: Presented to a graduating senior based upon her outstanding and continued service to the College, the Mount Union Greek Community and to her sorority. This woman excels in academics, leadership, campus and community participation and personal character.
Sarah S. Cleveland (senior exercise science major from Westlake, OH) of Alpha Chi Omega
Outstanding Senior Fraternity Man: Presented to a graduating senior man based on his outstanding contributions and continued service to the College, to the Mount Union Greek Community and to his fraternity. This man excels in academics, leadership, campus and community participation and personal character.
Alex R. Koehler (senior health and physical education major from Grove City, PA) of Phi Kappa Tau

The National Order of Omega is an honorary for junior and senior members of fraternities and sororities who demonstrate outstanding leadership to their own individual chapter, as well as the Greek community as a whole. Mount Union hosts the Pi Omicron chapter, which organizes a number of events throughout the academic year, including a faculty appreciation dinner in the fall semester and the annual Greek Awards Ceremony. Currently, 41 active members of the fraternity and sorority community, as well as nine members of the faculty, staff and administration at Mount Union have been bestowed this honor.
The Order of Omega, Pi Omicron chapter meets every other Thursday at 4:30 pm in the Kolenbrander-Harter Information Center Room 002.
