Healthcare Management Learning Objectives

Health Care Management Major is a relatively unique area of study in which there is a significant growing demand for students in this field. The curriculum will provide you with a solid foundation in business concepts, healthcare management skills and internship opportunities, while general education courses promote skills in critical thinking, communications and problem solving, ensuring that you’ll be well prepared for contemporary healthcare workplace challenges. With your degree, you’ll be prepared to put your passion for helping people into action in a variety of healthcare organizations, such as hospitals, public healthcare agencies, long-term care facilities, physician group practices, consulting firms, hospital equipment and supplies manufacturers and managed-care facilities. As a graduate, you’ll be able to qualify for positions such as assistant office manager or assistant administrator, and if you enter the program with prior experience in the field, you may qualify for positions like assistant office manager, assistant administrator or assistant clinical manager.

  • Demonstrate the knowledge of the fundamental and technical concepts of health care management and apply it to decision-making in managing the healthcare organizations
  • Identify and use health care management terminologies in oral and written communications.
  • Understand the other core disciplines of health care management: health economics, health care finance, health care policy, epidemiology, and/or public health to enhance decision-making in managing the healthcare organizations.
  • Perform effectively in work teams, both as a leader and a follower
  • Apply basic statistical, quantitative, and economic concepts and tools to support analysis and decision-making
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the primary ethical values underlying health care delivery (i.e., respect for persons, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, in managerial decision-making)
  • Demonstrate understanding of selected contemporary federal and state health policy issues
  • Understand the benefits and challenges of managing a diverse staff in the healthcare field in addressing the implications of gender, ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, age, and lifestyle diversity within the service population
