Homeless in the Quad Scheduled at Mount Union College
May 25, 2010
Mount Union College’s Office of Service-Learning and Community Service and Janus Group, an organization on campus that promotes social justice and responsible citizenship, will host “Homeless in the Quad” on Monday, April 14 and Tuesday, April 15 in the campus quad. The goal of the event is to educate members of the College community about homelessness.
Homeless in the Quad will begin on Monday at 4 p.m. with the registration of teams. From 5-8 p.m., teams will have the opportunity to compete against one another in the building of cardboard shelters after locating cardboard in various locations across campus. Cardboard for the event was donated by a number of area businesses including Sears, WalMart, The Timken Company and Grove Appliance TV and Audio. Teams will vie for the titles of Most Creative, Sturdiest and Ugliest with judges awarding prizes to the winning teams.
During this period, participants in the event will also have the opportunity to “beg” for food and money from fellow students and community members. The public is welcomed to attend and donations of non-perishable food items and money will be accepted. Food and monetary donations will benefit Feed My Sheep Ministries in Alliance. The team collecting the most donations will also be recognized with prizes.
In addition, from 5-9 p.m., four local bands will be providing entertainment.
The event will continue at 9 p.m. with a “Raise Your Voice” session where participants will be able to talk about issues in which they are interested. From 10 p.m. to midnight, students will participate in a number of team-building exercises.
Homeless in the Quad participants will then spend the night in the shelters that they built with only the blanket and pillow they were allowed to bring and the clothes on their backs. Clean up of the shelters will begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning and participants will join for a breakfast and reflection at 8 a.m.
The event will culminate with a convocation on Tuesday at 10:35 a.m. in Tolerton and Hood Hall Room 100, featuring Pastor Bobby Williams from Feed My Sheep Ministries and retired Mount Union faculty members Dr. Don Hobson and Carol DeGrange, founders of the Alliance Home for Children and Families. The convocation is open to the public.
