International Student Application Instructions
This page explains the International Student Admission Application process for the University of Mount Union. All international students and U.S. citizens currently residing outside of the United States are required to complete the following process. Note that all documents, including all transcripts, submitted to the University become the property of the University and can not be returned.
- Application for Admission to the University of Mount Union
Submit your Application for Admission to the Office of International Recruitment and Admission early in your senior year. We begin processing applications for each upcoming academic year on September 15. We strongly advise interested students to apply as early as possible. There is no application fee to apply for admission to Mount Union.
Students applying to the direct-entry nursing program have additional requirements for admission. Indicate nursing as the first academic interest on the “Academics” section of this application to generate additional questions required by nursing applicants. See the nursing admission requirements page on the website for more information on required materials for nursing applicants.
- Teacher Reference Form
The Teacher Reference Form will be forwarded to the instructor you indicate within your application. Please review this form to understand its purpose in serving as a recommendation. You may submit more than one Teacher Reference Form if you feel it is necessary
- Language Assessment
Please submit a score from ONE of the following: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL - Mount Union's code is 1492), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) OR certification that you have completed at least level 109 from the ELS Languages Centers curriculum. This is the minimum score level to be considered for admission.
- Academic Records
Secondary School Records
Submit certified English translations of your official academic records from all secondary school level coursework. If you have enrolled in courses at a level beyond secondary school, you will need to submit those official English language grade transcripts as well. Evaluation of all coursework, including ELS coursework, is a critical aspect of the candidate review process. Candidates are required to submit transcripts for all coursework attempted. This includes English as a Second Language (ESL Programs), Certificate Programs, Diploma Programs, and all Credit and Non-credit Programs completed after high school.Official University/College Transcripts
Any student who has attended a higher education institution must submit academic transcripts for coursework completed. You may be able to transfer these credits to Mount Union. Previous enrollment in a higher education institution will not negatively impact your academic scholarship eligibility. While some universities limit the amount of academic scholarship awarded to transfer students, Mount Union does not. If a transfer student would have qualified for an academic based scholarship at the time they completed secondary school and then continues at a high academic level during university, the transfer student will still be awarded an academic scholarship from the University of Mount Union. Need-based financial aid is not related to academic achievement and is available to any international student who qualifies via the International Student Financial Aid Application for the 2013-2014 academic year (if applying for Spring 2014 enrollment) or the International Student Financial Aid Application for the 2014-2015 academic year (if applying for Fall 2014 enrollment).
- Financial Statement
The University of Mount Union and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) require certification of adequate financial support from international student applicants. Such a statement must be on file before admission will be considered. United States visa regulations require that admission be based upon academic acceptance and satisfactory evidence of adequate funds to meet all of the expenses incurred in the student's proposed program of study. Please submit an official letter from a bank official showing specific dollar or local currency amounts available for your educational use or three months of bank statements verifying availability of funds. All documents must have original signatures and can be sources such as: bank statement, signed by an official, stating the exact amount of funds available; affidavit of support signed by the guarantor and showing the exact amount of support to be provided; copy of scholarship or government award letter; loan agreement or other document signed by the responsible official and showing the exact amount of funds available.
- Financial Aid Application (optional)
If you are applying for need-based financial aid, please fill out the International Student Financial Aid Application for the 2013-2014 academic year (if applying for Spring 2014 enrollment) or the International Student Financial Aid Application for the 2014-2015 academic year (if applying for Fall 2014 enrollment). Complete it to the best of your ability, sign and mail the application to the Office of International Recruitment and Admission at the address listed below. This form is also available from the Office of International Recruitment and Admission, from the College Board or from some guidance counselors. This is an optional form which does not take the place of the Financial Support Certification. According to Mount Union policy, financial aid is available only to those students who do not already hold an undergraduate degree.
Mount Union will send a financial aid award to you AFTER you have been accepted for admission to the University and after Mount Union has received the International Student Financial Aid Application. The awarding process starts mid-March and continues throughout the academic year.
- Additional Documents: These documents are required only in specific circumstances. They are not required of every applicant, so read carefully to determine if these requirements apply to your situation or consult the Office of International Recruitment and Admission to determine if your situation requires additional documents.
- Gap Letter: This letter must be submitted by students who have had a gap between the completion of their secondary education and the beginning of their university education that is longer than the standard time period in their country. For example, in the United States, students graduate from secondary school in June and are expected to begin university studies the following August or September. Those who wait to begin university at the beginning of the January semester would be considered to have a gap in their educational timeline. The gap letter must explain what you did during your time away from education and must be signed by you.
- Transfer Student Document Requirements: If you have completed any University level coursework including English as a Second Language (ESL Programs), Certificate Programs, Diploma Programs, and all Credit and Non-credit Programs completed after high school, you are required to submit the following items:
Official University/College Transcripts: Have official final transcripts of high school and all colleges/universities attended forwarded to Mount Union.
Dean of Students Form: The Dean of Students Form will be forwarded to the appropriate administrator at each of your previously attended institutions. Please review this form to understand its purpose in confirming your academic standing within the institution.
College Instructor Reference Form: The College Instructor Reference Form will be forwarded to the college instructor you indicate within your application. Please review this form to understand its purpose in serving as a recommendation. If you have been out of school for two or more years, you may alternatively indicate a supervisor at your most recent place of employment (including military service).
After ALL documents are received; an official admissions decision will be made within two to three weeks. Only original documents are acceptable. Simple photo-copies, faxes or emailed documents will not be accepted.
