Nearly 250 people immersed themselves in a variety of cultures during the 2009 international dinner “World Showcase” at Mount Union College.
International Education Week, a week of special events that promote international awareness, concluded on Saturday, November 21 with the dinner, which was sponsored by Mount Union’s Association of International Students (AIS).
The members of AIS prepared traditional foods from Spain, Korea, Germany, Vietnam, Ireland, Japan, India, France and Italy. Attendees had the opportunity to try a variety of appetizers including tortilla de patatas from Spain, glass noodles from Korea and salted pretzels from Germany. Entrees included chicken salad from Vietnam, Irish stew and soda bread from Ireland, Okonomiyaki from Japan, fried egg plant from India and soup de lentilles from France. For dessert, attendees enjoyed zenzai from Japan and tiramisu from Italy.
“The international dinner was a great success,” said Dawn Adams, assistant director of the Center for Global Education. “The AIS officers and members are dedicated to providing the Mount Union community with a fun and memorable event in conjunction with International Education Week.”
The event featured student performances and an international fashion and talent show. The entertainment program included mameshiba, an animated 30 second short commercial in Japan that teaches people random trivia. It also included singing, dancing, piano, belly dancing and calligraphy.
