Jailed for a Good Cause
April 2, 2003
Dr. Steve Kramer's "Social Responsibility" class held its annual Jail n' Bail, to raise funds to pay for expenses incurred during their recent Spring Break service trip to El Salvador.
From 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on April 2, members of the Mount Union College community had the opportunity to have professors or friends "jailed" in the Main Lounge of the Hoover-Price Campus Center. It was $1 to have someone jailed. People jailed could either spend a short time in the jail, pay $1 to be bailed out of jail, or prevent the jailing completely by paying $2. For an additional $1, you could find out who had you jailed.
During the recent trip to El Salvador, the "Social Responsibility" class spent much of the week working on the construction of latrines in a small village. Most of the people in the village did not have latrines. The students were also able to get to know many of the villagers. The fund raiser is particularly important this year, due to increased air fare.
The cost for the trip was approximately $1050 per student. Each student paid $300 and the class has attempted to raise the additional funds. Jail n' Bail has been very successful in past years.
The Jail n' Bail "headquarters" were located in the Campus Center, outside the Main Lounge.
