Since classes are small, we can focus on individual students, as there is no way for a student to hide. We are sure that students are competent in the areas we target.

Favorite Quote or Motto
“It is easier to get forgiveness than permission” and “There are two possible outcomes: if the result confirms the hypothesis, then you’ve made a measurement. If the result is contrary to the hypothesis, then you’ve made a discovery.”
If You Weren’t a Professor
I’d be a chef. I always used to say in graduate school, “If I wash out here, I’m going to culinary school.”
Surprising Fact About Yourself
I have more of a wild streak than most people would like to believe.
Places to Visit or Things to Do
I’d like to visit Antarctica—but for just a little while. I get the sense that I haven’t experienced anything close to that environment.
Favorite Movie
Patton or the Harry Potter movies
Favorite Book
Any Sherlock Holmes mystery
Hobbies and Interests
I enjoyed coaching my son’s soccer team for years. I also like playing chess and cooking.

Teaching Area(s): Chemistry

Title: Professor of Chemistry, Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Interim Chair of the Department of Engineering
Courses Taught: Chemistry

Career
Chemistry is often referred to as the “central science,” which means that I can attach a whole range of problems and whatever I might be interested in.

Teaching Style
My teaching philosophy centers on excitement, engagement and discovery. I would rather have students “do and learn” than “be told and maybe learn,” and to this end my courses have a great deal of hands-on assignments.

Chemistry at the Interface
My research focuses on the chemistry that occurs at interfaces. My current work involves atmospheric aerosols, which are known to play significant roles in climate change, photochemical smog and acid deposition. In terms of curricula, we recently instituted a unique general chemistry sequence that allows students to begin in the best course for them, based on their background. This has been quite successful for us.

Bracy is Best
Bracy Hall is a really excellent facility. It’s great to work in, and the addition will provide much needed space for the science programs.

Focus on Individual Students
In chemistry and biochemistry, we are constantly focused on developing skills, critical thinking and analysis abilities of our students. Since classes are small, we can focus on individual students, as there is no way for a student to hide. We are sure that students are competent in the areas we target.

Research Interests
Teaching chemistry through cooking, computational chemistry, spectroscopy
