Why Mount Union
I love how family-based Mount Union is. When you step on campus the majority of students will be wearing some sort of clothing with a sport, club or activity on it; you see a lot of Purple Raider pride everywhere you go. Everyone supports everyone and it truly feels like we are one big Raider family. Mount Union also gave me the opportunity to continue playing the sport I love while receiving a great education.
A Lasting Impact
Nearly every semester I’ve been at Mount Union I have had the opportunity to be in a classroom teaching Pre-K – 3rd graders. My favorite experience thus far was when I went back to Lexington Elementary and had a former student come up to me and tell me how well he was doing in 1st grade while giving me a hug. It showed me the lasting impact I’m making on kids lives and I’m not even a certified teacher yet.
My favorite education class was Children’s Literature taught by Amy Laubscher-Milnes. This was my favorite class because we did every assignment with a purpose. Whether it was to learn about ourselves, or learn how to teach our students, Amy showed us so much through her class.
My favorite professor is Amy Laubscher-Milnes. She’s influenced me on my path to success by showing me I can conquer any obstacle set in front of me. Through class assignments, she has taught me how to have confidence in myself and my abilities. Her class opened my eyes to who I truly am as a person and I can’t thank her enough for that.
A Liberal Arts Education
The combination of a liberal arts education and professional preparation makes students feel confident when they go out into the real world. They feel that they know what they need to do in order to be successful in their field and that they have been taught the necessary things to do so.
Future Professor and Coach
My ultimate career goal/dream is to become a professor and Division I college softball coach. Mount Union is preparing me for this by giving me opportunities to teach and coach while completing my course studies. Also, by giving me the chance to be a collegiate athlete, Mount Union has taught me the value of teamwork, dedication and resilience, which are all necessary in both of my areas of study.
Advice to Prospective Students
Follow your heart. When making my decision on where to commit to college I was scared to come to Mount Union because it was an hour and a half away from my hometown, but I knew I belonged here. I followed my heart despite being scared and it ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
