Jorge Avila to Present Violin Recital at Mount Union College

Jorge Avila will present a violin recital on Tuesday, October 29 at 8 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall.
Avila has toured the United States twice. He received his bachelor's degree from Mannes College of Music in New York City. He was recently awarded first prize at the 2001 Mu Phi Epsilon International Competition. Mu Phi Epsilon is an international professional music fraternity.
Avila is currently an active freelance performer and teacher in the New York area. He is considered one of today's leading young Latin American violinists. Avila has performed as a soloist with orchestras in Europe and both Central and South America. In the New York City area, he has appeared as a soloist with the Riverside Orchestra and Bronx Arts Ensemble. He recently appeared as concertmaster and soloist with the New York Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. He frequently appears as the onstage violinist in The Music Man on Broadway and has also played in the orchestras of other Broadway shows, such as The Scarlet Pimpernel, Aida, Annie Get Your Gun and The Producers. He is the founding member of the Chalfonte Quartet.
Avila will be accompanied by Shirley Allen Finney, a 1955 graduate of Mount Union. She has taught piano and organ, served as an organist for several area churches and provided piano accompaniment for area and visiting musicians. She is a member and former president of Alliance Alumni Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon.
The concert is presented by Alliance Alumni chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon, the Phi chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon at Mount Union and the music department of Mount Union. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the department of music at (330) 823-2180.
