Kappa Pi Receives Arts in Stark Grant

July 16, 2012

ALLIANCE, Ohio — Members of Kappa Pi, the University of Mount Union’s arts honorary, sought and received an Arts in Stark grant to create a display of historical photos at the Alliance Community Pantry.

According to Susan Denning, director of stewardship and grants at Mount Union, she was approached to write the grant by Mount Union senior Teresa Kruckenberg, president of Kappa Pi, along with Mount Union professor of art Joel Collins. Members of Kappa Pi sought the grant, “An Appetite for Art,” in order to enhance the atmosphere for pantry clients.

“We’re so fortunate to have such a talented photographer in Joel Collins who could work with the historical photos and enable the community to better enjoy them,” Denning said.

The grant provided funding for 20 photographs from the Alliance Historical Society’s archive at Rodman Public Library to be printed, framed and matted. Photos, along with descriptions of historical sites, are now on display at the pantry, located on East Market Street.

“I was encouraged to see our students who are part of the arts honorary take an interest in the larger community,” Denning said. “This project allows a population of people who are low income to access information about Alliance’s history and really know that they are part of that history.”
