I also wanted to attend a university that was committed to the environment and the community, and I felt like all of these things were important at Mount Union.

MY EXCEPTIONAL STORY
The right college for me
When I was in high school, I knew I wanted to attend a college that had strong academics, recreational opportunities and lots of different ways to get involved. I also wanted to attend a university that was committed to the environment and the community, and I felt like all of these things were important at Mount Union. Upon first seeing campus, I thought it was absolutely beautiful. I felt really comfortable and at home, and everyone I met on campus was really nice. It truly felt like it was a place I could grow as a person, which was what I ultimately wanted in a college.
Double majoring
I am actually majoring in two subjects – Spanish and sociology. I absolutely loved my Spanish class in high school, so I knew that I wanted to continue learning more Spanish in college. I thought that I would major in international business and economics, but I found out relatively quickly that it wasn’t the right major for me. Through research and experience, I have found that sociology fits my interests much better. I really enjoy sociology and Spanish, as they will both help me on my way to a career in the human services field.
Learning English
My favorite hands-on experience thus far has been working with two boys from Guatemala who are learning English. I work with them for about three hours a week and I have learned more about their culture and have had a lot of fun along the way.
Enlightening classes
A class that really still sticks out in my mind is Paul and Early Christianity. I took this class with Dr. Susan Haddox, associate professor of philosophy and religious studies, and it was really enlightening. I learned a lot and really enjoyed going to class every day because we talked about ideas that I had never thought about before.
Caring professor
Choosing a favorite teacher is hard, but I would have to say Dr. Gregg Courtad, professor of Spanish. I have had four classes with him so far, and it is easy to see how much he cares. He is always helpful and does his best to make each topic interesting and worthwhile.
Overcome poverty
My dream is to work for a nonprofit organization that works towards improving the lives of those who live in the United States and abroad. I want to help people overcome poverty and homelessness so that they too can achieve their dreams. I also would like to conduct research and write grants for nonprofits.
