Kelly Slutz Receives Heaton W. Harris Prize

ALLIANCE, Ohio – University of Mount Union graduate Kelly Slutz of Orville, OH was presented with The Heaton W. Harris and Corinne Harris Smith Senior Prize at the University’s 167th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11, 2013.
The prize is presented to that member of the graduating class who ranks highest in scholarship, the entire academic curriculum being considered. Kelly majored in Spanish and minored in sociology and environmental science. In addition to receiving the Heaton W. Harris and Corinne Harris Smith Senior Prize, she received the Laurie Kolenbrander Public Service Award, Maria Leonard Book Award and Rufus Ruth Romance language Prize at the annual Senior Recognition and Honors Convocation.
While on campus, she served as an advancement ambassador and was a member of the College Judicial Board, Kappa Phi Club, Spiritual Life Leadership, Student Senate, TOMS Campus Club, the women’s golf team, Alpha Lambda Delta, Geology Club, the Honors Program, Sociology Club, Sophomore Service, Campus Crusade for Christ, History/Political Science Club, Kappa Delta Pi, Accounting Club, Scholastic Achievement Coalition, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, M Club and Campus Church. She also participated in study abroad, was named to the Dean’s List and graduated summa cum laude.
This summer, Kelly will travel to Ecuador for seven weeks with Amigos de las Americas, an international, non-profit organization. After returning from Ecuador, Kelly will attend Northern Arizona University, where she will pursue a master’s degree in sustainable communities.
