MY EXCEPTIONAL STORY
Why Mount Union
I chose to come to the University of Mount Union to play volleyball and to pursue Mechanical Engineering. There are countless opportunities available on campus both in my field of study and as an athlete. Mount Union offers endless possibilities for students with different interests, so no student should feel excluded.
I spend most of my time in the Engineering and Business Building (EBB) because of my major. I also like to spend time there because it is near the center of campus and you can see so many other things from the center of campus.
Escape from the Details
Art is one of my majors because it is an escape for me from the hustle of the typical day and it helps in the designing aspect of engineering. Engineering gives me the ability to study these details. I have always been intrigued with how things work and fit together.
Things in Motion
One of my favorite hands-on experiences has been working on the Mini-Baja car in one of my engineering courses because it allows me to put some of my knowledge to use. In addition to building a car in my engineering courses, I have applied my desire for understanding motion in my art senior culminating experience (SCE) project. I have developed a study capturing things in motion – a topic that touches on many different parts of everyday life that we often overlook. I have the opportunity to paint different subjects in different perspectives to convey a life-like message to the viewer.
My favorite teacher was my initial engineering advisor, the late Dr. Donna Michalek. She always pushed me to continue learning, even when I was frustrated. She was always very encouraging and was certain that I would succeed. Her dedication to students, even until the time of her passing, was truly inspirational and heart-warming. Because of her faith in me, I have an extra drive to succeed.
My goal is to develop a career in the engineering field, working side by side with my dad, who is also an engineer. With him, work is not work, it is fun! I am not certain what exactly I would like to focus on, but with continued exposure to the opportunities in the field, I am sure something will capture my attention. I will continue to use my art degree to create pieces for enjoyment, simply because I love painting.
