Light Up the Lakes Planned for Friday
April 13, 2015
ALLIANCE, Ohio – Honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed away, members of the University of Mount Union and Alliance communities are invited to come together at the Mount Union Lakes at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 17 for a floating candlelight vigil.
This is the third Light Up the Lakes eventsince its debut. All are invited to come and give a minimum of a $1 donation to float a candle, provided by Alpha Phi Omega (APO), on the campus lakes in memory of a loved one.
This year, APO will donate half of the funds collected to the Popovich family in honor of their deceased brother, freshman nursing major of Canfield, Ohio, Matthew Popovich. The remaining half of the funds will be donated to the Alliance Community Pantry.
Katey May, a senior integrated media major from East Liverpool, Ohio, discussed her inspiration for the event.
“This year, Light Up the Lakes will definitely hit home for APO,” May said. “This is the first time we have ever experienced the loss of a brother in the history of the Xi Upsilon chapter. It's been rough on our chapter to lose such an outstanding member of our organization, but we will put on the best event possible in honor of Matt. I think that Light Up the Lakes will symbolize our chapter releasing our pain of losing him, but it will also be a fantastic way to remember the passion that Matt had for life, for APO, and for everything else he did.”
Floating candles will be available by donation only at the lakes.
