I think a geology major should have a natural curiosity about the earth and how it works. That person should also be open to learning new things as there are many areas that one could focus on in the major itself. Once you’re interested in the stuff you’re studying, learning the concepts becomes quite easy!

Why did you choose to pursue your degree?
I chose geology because I’ve always been interested in the physical sciences and how the earth operates. A major in geology gives me the opportunity to learn about the history and processes of the natural environment of our planet. I also enjoyed the diversity of the geology major. It’s a lot more than just rocks, which people usually expect when they think of geology.

What types of jobs are available for students who share your major?
There’s a wide variety of jobs available for geology majors. You could get a job in water resources (hydrology), natural gas surveying, and work with construction companies, among many other fields. Companies have a demand for geology majors as they need someone with a geology background to survey land they want to build on to make sure it’s safe. You can’t build your company’s headquarters on a sinkhole, for example.

How will you use your degree upon graduation?
While I’m still keeping my options open, I’m considering trying to get a job with the United States Geological Survey, perhaps working with water conservation. I’ve also thought about going to graduate school and becoming a professor of geology. My professors at Mount Union seem to have fun teaching what they love, and I could see myself doing the same someday!

What activities are you involved in?

I’m involved with quite a few activities on campus. I work at WRMU-FM, the campus radio station, as a music director and on-air DJ for the oldies weekend on the station. I also have my own student radio show! I’m a member of Student Senate, the Geology Club, and the campus Music House.

What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you?
Talk to one of the geology professors. They’re nice and quite knowledgeable about the major and what you can do with it. I’d also suggest taking the introduction course in geology. It goes over the basics pretty well, so you’ll know if geology is right for you.
