Martin Luther King Jr. Events Planned at Mount Union College

 The community is invited to join Mount Union College in honoring the memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 20 with a variety of events, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Dorothy Spruill Redford

Dorothy Spruill Redford, author of "Somerset Homecoming" and executive director of North Carolina's Somerset Place State Historic Site, will give the keynote address at the Rodman Playhouse Theatre at 9:30 a.m. Located in Creswell, Somerset Place State Historic Site is an antebellum plantation on which four generations of Redford's enslaved ancestors lived. Redford has developed the site, now a resource for learning about the history of both African-Americans and whites in the region. The address will be followed by an awards ceremony. Student and community awards will be presented to those whose actions best exemplify the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The "Tunnel of Oppression," an interactive exhibit which deals with oppression and prejudice of many kinds, will be open from 11:30 a.m. - 6 p. m. in the Alumni Room and Main Lounge of the Hoover-Price Campus Center. At 6 p.m., there will be a post-discussion of the "Tunnel of Oppression" in the main lounge of the Hoover-Price Campus Center.

At 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m., an interactive program dealing with social inequities, "Archie Bunker's Neighborhood," will be presented in the Campus Grounds of the Hoover-Price Campus Center.

There will be question and answer sessions with keynote speaker Dorothy Spruill Redford at 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. in the Private Dining Room of the Hoover-Price Campus Center.

All are welcome for conversation and refreshments in the main hallway of the Hoover-Price Campus Center from 3 - 3:30 p.m.

"Experiencing the Civil Rights Movement in Word and Song," which includes narration, song and films to tell the story of the key events in the civil rights movement will be presented at 3:30 p.m. in the Campus Grounds in the Hoover-Price Campus Center.
