Matriculation Convocation Ceremony Ushers in 2009-2010 Academic Year
September 01, 2009
New freshmen at Mount Union College had the opportunity to participate in one of the institution's most time-honored traditions recently as the campus community welcomed the Class of 2013 at the annual Matriculation Convocation.
The Matriculation Convocation is a tradition where the faculty and freshmen students usher in the academic year. New students were welcomed by Dr. Patricia Draves, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the College and greeted by Dr. Richard F. Giese, president of Mount Union.
Giese advised students to remember the fundamentals and keep it simple, including going to class, staying on campus, trying new things and asking for help.
“You are embarking on a journey with the destination unknown,” said Giese. “Enjoy the ride and remember to stay with the fundamentals.”
Alumni Council First Vice President Daniel Griffith offered an alumni perspective on the Mount Union community and Student Senate President Amanda Moore '11 encouraged the freshmen class to get involved.
“I encourage each of you to look at this experience as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a fresh start,” said Moore. “You have come into this institution with a clean slate and you can be whoever you choose to be.”
Dr. Peter Schneller, associate professor of education and the 2009 Great Teacher, then addressed the audience.
After learning of its significance from Draves, students had the opportunity to sign the Matriculation Book, which remains in the care if the Office of the President until graduation. At that time, it is placed on display in the campus bookstore for students to see.
