Teaching Area(s): Engineering

On Mount Union’s campus, the engineering faculty and I are collaborating to create a civil and mechanical engineering curricula geared for the future that addresses industrial needs. Our engineering curricula emphasizes two main things that industry wants: hands-on education and the ability to communicate effectively.

Careers

Career Prospects
According to the Bureau for Labor Statistics (BLS), employment in the field of mechanical engineering is projected to increase approximately 5% over the course of the next decade with job prospects predicted to be highest for those who are on top of the latest advances in technology. That’s why Mount Union’s program in mechanical engineering focuses on exposing students to the innovations in the field through equipment and sophisticated software that allow students to garner the hands-on experience that is critical to their career success.

The engineering faculty at the University of Mount Union consider hands-on experience to be a top priority, and they are focused on preparing you professionally and personally for this challenging field. Graduates will be prepared to hit the ground running after graduation, whether seeking a professional position or graduate studies and eventually sitting for the Professional Engineer Exam if they choose to pursue this certification.

Wide Range of Employers
A degree in mechanical engineering, one of the broadest disciplines in the field, can open the door to limitless possibilities. With hands-on activities and useful classroom time, you will develop a professional work ethic in preparation for career opportunities including.

The Bureau for Labor Statistics indicates that, by trade, mechanical engineers research, design, develop, manufacture and test tools, engines, machines and other mechanical devices. Some develop tools that other engineers use in their daily work, while others choose to pursue careers in agriculture production, maintenance, technical sales, administration and management.

Mechanical Engineers’ Salary
Starting salaries for mechanical engineering graduates average in the $55,000 to $60,000 range. These salaries could be higher if students interned or participated in co-op experiences. In general, engineering salaries rise at a healthy pace with experience and possessing sought-after skill sets.
