July 27, 2009
Melissa Gardner has been named executive director of public affairs and marketing at Mount Union College.
Gardner joined the staff in 1998 as assistant director and in 2002 she was promoted to director. Since then she has been responsible for the development of college publications as well as overseeing the media relations and electronic communications components of the office. She was instrumental in the creation of Mount Union’s Identity Program and has been responsible for its implementation and the establishment of trademarking and licensing initiatives.
“During her 11 years with the College, Melissa has proven her abilities and gained experience in nearly every aspect of public relations and marketing,” said Richard F. Giese, president of the College. “Not only will her experience provide for a seamless transition, but it will allow for the office to build upon an already strong foundation while further enhancing its ability to strategically build the reputation of Mount Union.”
In her new role, Gardner is responsible for developing marketing, public relations, advertising, electronic communication and media relations strategies and oversees the implementation of those strategies. She also continues to cultivate relationships with media representatives, develop publications and provide assistance in communicating messages, both verbally and in written form.
“I feel very privileged to be given this opportunity and am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead as we begin to plan our future public relations and marketing efforts,” said Gardner. “I am fortunate to have compiled a staff of extremely competent, dedicated and creative individuals who share my overall objectives and passion for the institution.”
A native of Minerva, Ohio, she graduated magna cum laude from Mount Union in 1998, earning a bachelor of arts degree in mass media. In 2002, she earned a master of arts degree in journalism and mass communication from Kent State University.
On campus Gardner is the faculty advisor for Alpha Eta Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega National Sorority and the advisor of the Mount Union College Dance Team. She is a member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the College and University Designer’s Association. She also serves as a choreographer for the Carnation City Players and assists the Alliance Farmers’ Market with publicity. She has served as a member of the Beta Psi Beta Alumni Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega National Sorority, the Alliance Area United Way 50th Anniversary Committee and the Alliance Community Hospital Women’s Wellness Retreat Committee.
