Message From the Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Professions Program Director

Welcome to the Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Professions Program at the University of Mount Union. The program is designed for those of you who are interested in the healthcare fields including medicine (allopathic and osteopathic), dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, physician assistant (PA), physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), podiatry, chiropractic medicine and veterinary medicine. The program seeks to guide you through the process of obtaining admission into one of these professional programs. With aid from the Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Professions Committee, you will first plan your course of study. At Mount Union, we do not have a “pre-med” major. Rather, you will have a traditional major. You see, professional schools do not require any specific major – they all have prerequisite courses that they want you to have taken. Listed below are the majors of some recent Mount Union graduates and the healthcare related professional schoolsto which they were admitted.

We, the Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Professions Committee, will help you in choosing the courses that you need to take in order to fulfill both your Mount Union requirements and those pre-requisite courses for the professional program. This is done in conjunction with your academic advisor.

Throughout your years at Mount Union, you will have the opportunity to be involved with co-curricular programming in the Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Professions Program. This includes guest speakers through the Pre-Health Professions Club, professional school mock interviews and internship and shadowing opportunities, which includes our Health Coach Program as part of the Alliance Community Hospital’s community care network. As health coaches, our students can be integral parts of the post-hospitalization care of individuals who have chronic health problems and tend to be non-compliant with doctor’s orders. This is an amazing opportunity for undergraduates at the University, since we are only the second college or university with this type of program. The Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Professions Committee will also handle any committee letters of evaluation, which are being required by more and more professional schools.

We look forward to helping you in your journey toward a career in healthcare. Feel free to contact me with any questions that you might have. Schedule a campus visit today to learn more.
