Why did you choose to pursue your degree?
I chose to pursue a degree in biochemistry because it incorporates each area of study needed to prepare me for dental school in order to pursue a career in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. The mix of biology and chemistry courses provides a broad education while creating a much more holistic appreciation for science and its integral application in medicine. I feel that my biochemistry degree will allow me to approach problems from many different angles and use multiple perspectives to obtain a solution.
What types of jobs are available for students who share your major?
A degree in biochemistry provides many different career opportunities that a student can pursue. Some students choose to pursue pre-professional school, whether it is in dentistry, medicine, optometry, etc. Other students can choose to continue their education and move to graduate school to obtain their PhD in biochemistry or they may take advantage of the countless opportunities offered to graduates within the industry. Careers within the industry for students who hold a degree in biochemistry can range from product development all the way to ensuring quality control.
How will you use your degree upon graduation?
Upon graduation I will continue my education by attending dental school to obtain my D.D.S. or D.M.D. After completing my dental education I plan to pursue a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and plan to one day open my own practice.

Curiosity in chemistry and biology is essential for success in biochemistry. A successful biochemistry student does not merely accept everything they are taught, but rather attempts to understand why the information they are given is true. Biochemistry students appreciate and strive to understand the interconnections between biology and chemistry in an effort to discover the countless applications that these connections have in our everyday lives.
