ALLIANCE, Ohio — More than 300 University of Mount Union students and area community members participated in the University’s annual MLK Day of Service on Monday morning.
“Knowing that nearly 300 of our students and another 20 to 30 community members and younger students choose to spend the morning giving back to our community rather than do anything else is incredible,” said event organizer Abby Honaker, assistant director of the Regula Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement at Mount Union.
Volunteers completed various tasks at locations including Salem Habitat, Altercare, Alliance for Children and Families, Alliance YWCA, Alliance YMCA, Alliance Moose Lodge, Alliance Towers, Copeland Oaks, Rodman Public Library, United Way, Canterbury Villa, Interfaith Childcare, Sterling House, Men’s Challenge, Alliance Neighborhood Center, Alliance Domestic Violence Shelter, Alchemy Acres, Alliance Community Pantry, Beech Creek Botanical Gardens, Union Avenue Preschool, McCrea Manor, Alliance and Canton Goodwills, Feed My Sheep Ministries, Salem Restore, the Alliance Historical Black History Museum, Auburn Nursing and Roselawn Terrace.
“Our volunteers were willing to do everything from playing with animals to giving manicures at nursing homes to cleaning and painting,” Honaker said. “The list of tasks they achieved is truly impressive. Knowing young people care about the community is always inspiring."
