More than 4,000 Pairs of Shoes Collected for Soles4Souls Community-Wide Shoe Drive
December 10, 2009
Mount Union’s chapter of Fellowship for Christian Athletes (FCA) collected 4,400 pairs of shoes and $2,000 for the international relief effort, Soles4Souls.
Soles4Souls is a non-profit charitable organization that donates shoes worldwide to those in need. Jay Carpenter, senior biology major of Fairmont, WV and Mike Border, senior biochemistry major of Strongsville, serve as campus co-leaders of FCA, and were instrumental in organizing this community service project.
“The unbelievable success of this project can be attributed to the joint effort of Mount Union College student organizations and the surrounding communities,” said Carpenter.
Beginning in late October, three collection sites were set up on campus to collect new and gently used shoes. All types of shoes were accepted including athletic shoes, dress shoes, work boots, rain boots, cleats, dance shoes and flip flops. In addition to the collection on campus, a shoe drive was held at the Mount Union Purple Raiders’ football game against Otterbein College. Fans who donated a pair of shoes received a free ticket to the final regular season home game against Marietta College. Purple shoelaces were also sold for $2 to help offset the cost of shipping the shoes to those in need.
FCA doubled their initial goal of collecting 1,500 pairs of shoes.
“This project has not only united the Mount Union campus and Alliance community, but it also has provided an opportunity to improve the lives of thousands of people that desperately need help,” Carpenter said. “This project demonstrated how a united effort in the act of giving can produce amazing results.”
Other members of the Soles4Souls committee included Sean Cook, junior business administration major of Alliance; Ali Gasser, junior communication major of Hubbard; Drew McClain, senior business administration major of Newark; Ryan Sigler, senior business administration major of Canton; and Korey Young, junior biology major of Poland.Back to Previous Page
