Mount Receives $100,000 Teacher Planning Grant

The University of Mount Union recently received word that it is among the 11 college and universities in Ohio to receive a $100,000 Teacher Planning Grant for the 2011-2012 Academic Year from eTech Ohio Commission.
 
According to eTech Ohio’s website (etech.ohio.gov), future teachers must take every opportunity to utilize education technologies in an effort to ensure the K-12 students of today have the technological competencies required to be career and college ready by graduation. Practicing teachers must remain on top of new developments in technology-enabled learning. In addition, pre-service teachers entering the classroom should be prepared to meet the challenges of teaching in a 21st century classroom and are competent in utilizing information and communication technologies to enhance teaching and learning. This grant will allow eTech to foster close partnerships with Ohio colleges and universities, and collectively help to expand, improve and enhance the use of technology in the teaching and learning environment.
 
In Mount Union’s case, the grant will go toward the following:
  • Purchasing of iPads
  • Revamping of an educational media course (CS 218Q)
  • Working with the Alliance Early Learning School, Louisville Elementary School and West Branch Middle School during the 2011-2012 school year 
“This will certainly be of benefit to our pre-service teachers, but also to the in-service teachers and students in each of the three districts,” said Dr. Melissa Askren Edgehouse ’99, assistant professor of education at Mount Union. “We're so excited to begin this fantastic project!”
 
The grant aligns with eTech Ohio's strategic goal – to work with all levels of the educator community and make recommendations in 2011 for changes in teacher and administrator preparation, certification and re-certification programs to include rigorous educational technology instruction in required curricula.  Work is being done in order to increase the daily use of educational technology within K-12 classrooms by 80% to support standards-based instruction.

“These funds provide a way to equip future teachers and modernize current classroom practices all at once,” said Kate Harkin, executive director of eTech Ohio. “Ohio is invested in 21st century skills development, and I am pleased that the impact of these funds is doubled through the cooperative partnership of higher education and K‐12 institutions.”
