Mount Union Celebrates Homecoming

ALLIANCE, Ohio – University of Mount Union graduates made their way back to campus to commemorate Alumni Weekend and Homecoming on Saturday.

The annual Mr. UMU competition kicked off the weekend’s events Friday evening. The winner was Tyler Johnston, a senior athletic training major of Lyndhurst, OH.

Saturday began with the annual Run-A-MUC 5K Race and a 1-mile Paint Race. A Kid’s Race was held for children 7 and under following Run-A-MUC.

Also on Saturday morning, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the University’s new Performing Arts Complex. The new complex will come in the form of a significant renovation and addition to the west end of the existing facility. The renovated complex will include a new lobby, proscenium theatre, black box theatre, green room, scene shop, costume shop, dressing area, art gallery and choir room as well as a renovated band room.

The annual Alumni Brunch honored the recipients of the Dodie Davis Alumni Service Award and the Young Alumni Award. This year’s recipients of the Dodie Davis Alumni Service Award are Paula (Cope ’75) Andreani, Leigh Mainwaring ’70 and Debby (Betz ’73) and Dave ’69 Wolpert.

Andreani, a native of Cadiz, OH, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in German from Mount Union in 1975. She went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in Spanish from the University of Akron. Currently Andreani teaches Spanish part-time at Regina Coeli-St. Joseph Catholic School.

Mainwaring, a native of Alliance, OH, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Mount Union in 1970. She served as the associate director of computing services at Ball State University.

Debby, a native of Paris, OH, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Mount Union in 1973. She retired after a 30-year teaching career in Louisville City School District where she taught mathematics. She currently works in the University Store on campus as a seasonal employee.

Dave, a native of Alliance, OH, graduated from Mount Union in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. He returned to Mount Union in 2004 as the director of planned giving after retiring from a 31-year banking career.

This year’s recipient of the Young Alumni Award is Daniel Luketic. A native of Rootstown, OH, Luketic is a former Mount Union presidential scholar and the 2008 Outstanding Senior Man. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, Luketic took an entrepreneurial route and is co-founder and president of Risk Management Technologies, co-founder of YouLobby and co-founder of PixieFlip. He also works part time with Bizdom, a startup accelerator. He is on the board of Technology Accelerator Alliance and is chair of the Alumni Association’s Communication Committee. In 2011, he was among the 40 under 40 honorees recognized by the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.

Events preceding the game were a Faculty Art Exhibit, informational admissions sessions for alumni and teenage legacies and a parade through campus.

Other events that took place throughout the weekend included a Nature Walk at the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center, a Family Fun – Street Fair, a performance by mind reader Eric Dittelman and Trick-or-Treat with the Raiders.
