Mount Union Celebrates National Wear Purple Day

February 28, 2011

The University of Mount Union celebrated its very own National Wear Purple Day on Saturday, February 26 at Westfield Belden Village Shopping Mall from 11 a.m to 3 p.m. in Canton, OH. More than 500 members of the community showed their support for Mount Union and all things purple by attending the event.

The event included many activities for individuals of all ages including complimentary photographs with MUcaw and performances by Mount Union’s cheerleading squad and dance team. Attendees also had the opportunity to spin a prize wheel for a chance to win a variety of prizes such as Mount Union t-shirts, sweatshirts, recyclable bags, recyclable water bottles and static stickers, among other giveaways. Mount Union’s National Wear Purple Day was supported by Best Buy Mobile, Chick-fil-A, Mix 94.1 WHBC, Q92 WDJQ and 1310 WDPN.
The event was not only promoted locally, but other Mount Union alumni nationwide wore purple in an effort to bring awareness to the University of Mount Union brand. And, for one graduate, purple plays a significant role in her life far beyond her association with the institution. Shelly Edwards, a 1985 graduate of Mount Union, made a vow almost three years ago to wear the color purple every single day.
Shelly Edwards '85“Purple has always been my favorite color,” said Edwards. “It’s really funny because purple is my birthstone, my alma mater’s color and the official color for the Alzheimer's Association.”
Edwards has been the community services manager and master trainer for the Alzheimer’s Association since October 2007. “I wear purple every day because I want people to know that we need to wipe out Alzheimer’s disease,” she said. “I always have purple nail polish on and I wear purple eye glasses. It serves as a constant reminder for others and me to raise awareness of this irreversible brain disease.”
It is evident that Edwards truly “bleeds purple,” and ironically her birthday this year fell on Mount Union’s National Wear Purple Day.
