Mount Union College and Stark MRDD to Kick Off Collaboration with Sounds of Joy Sing Along
September 29, 2008
A new collaborative relationship between Mount Union College and Stark MRDD that will include support and education from the College’s academic departments will kick off with a concert at the College on Friday, October 3 at 8 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
Sounds of Joy is made up of selected individuals who love to sing from the Cohen-Joliet and Higgins workshops of Stark MRDD as well as local members of the Villa Maria Dementia Care Center. Each participant will begin his or her favorite song and then the audience will be asked to join in singing.
The College’s economics, accounting and business administration department will work with the staff of Stark MRDD to suggest ways of improving the management of the workshops and the marketing of the products produced. In the fall 2008, members of the department will begin a pilot project designed to determine the marketability of workshop products. In both fall and spring, a marketing class will be assigned Stark MRDD as its client. Student groups in the class will prepare a marketing plan and present the proposals to TWi (The Workshops, Inc) in the fall and Stark MRDD in the spring.
A series of workshops will be conducted by the College’s art department for Stark MRDD staff responsible for designing art projects for the clients of TWI. The first workshop will be held in the fall of 2008 and the second and third will be held in the first half of 2009.
The College’s communication department is also working jointly with the Stark MRDD public relations staff to provide an intern to assist in the area of public relations. In addition, the College’s education department has students observing at Eastgate and Southgate schools and relationships with other departments are being explored.
