Mount Union College Implements Super Service Saturdays

September 11, 2009

The Office of Service-Learning and Community Service at Mount Union has implemented a new service program entitled “Super Service Saturdays.”

One Saturday of each month, faculty, staff and students will take on a service project off-campus at a local community partner agency.

“This experience will not only benefit various local community partner agencies but others as well,” said Heather Eichner, Ohio Campus Compact and AmeriCorps Vista at Mount Union. “I think it’s important to promote service-learning and get involved in your local communities.”

The first Super Service Saturday will be held at Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary on Saturday, September 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Each monthly project will be different, but they may include cleaning, painting, cooking, serving, facilitating crafts and activities, playing with animals or interacting with clients.

Super Service Saturdays will be held during the months of September through April. The service program is open to all faculty, staff and students. Those who choose to participate in two or more service projects will receive a t-shirt. Community partners have limited space at their agencies so those who are interested should contact Eichner as soon as possible at (330) 829-8228 or Transportation will be provided as well as either lunch or dinner. At the end of the day, participants will close the service project with a reflection activity. They will reflect about their experiences and why their service was important and needed.
