Mount Union College Participates in "Make A Difference Day"

Mount Union College students, faculty and staff were involved in several service projects on Saturday, October 25 for the 13th annual "Make a Difference Day."
Several members of Delta Sigma Tau cleaned up the gym and kitchen in the Alliance Neighborhood Center, members of Sophomore Service cleared trails and worked on a boardwalk at the John T. Huston - Dr. John D. Brumbaugh Nature Center and members of Students for Environmental Awareness raked leaves for area retired Mount Union professors.
Students from the LS100 classes of Dr. Benjamin Burlingham, instructor of chemistry, Randy Clark, instructor of communication, Dr. Steve Kramer, professor of psychology, and Sigma Theta Epsilon volunteered to paint pumpkins with residents of Alterra Sterling House, Community Care Center and McCrea Manor. Brunner's Greenhouse and Farm Market donated 70 pumpkins for the painting projects.
Thorne's IGA donated 100 paper bags for the "Make a Difference Day" food drive. The bags were left on the porches of local residents starting Monday, October 20.
At the end of the week, students from Sophomore Service collected 62 bags of donated canned goods and clothing and took them to the Salvation Army.
Dr. Martin Horning, professor of economics, and his EC105 class participated in the Great Pumpkin Race, an event held in conjunction with "Make a Difference Day." Proceeds of the race benefit the Special Olympics.
Reverend Marty CashBurless, chaplain of the College, and group of students from Religious Life helped repair the labyrinth at Trinity Episcopal Church.
Also, Saturday evening, seventeen student volunteers spent the night outside during "Homeless on the Quad" to raise awareness about homelessness.
"Make a Difference Day" is a national, annual event that provides an opportunity for individuals to volunteer and make a difference in their local communities. The College's "Make a Difference Day" participation is sponsored by the office of service learning and community service.
