Mount Union College Receives Up ‘til Dawn Rookie of The Year Award
August 28, 2009
Mount Union College recently received the Up ‘til Dawn Rookie of The Year Award at the 2009 St. Jude Collegiate Leadership Seminar in Memphis, TN.
Up ‘til Dawn, a student-led, student-run philanthropic fundraising program that was held at Mount Union this past fall, raised more than $74,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Mount Union students received this award because of their tremendous success in their first year of participating, including the amount of money that they raised, how many students were involved and the overall quality of their program on campus. Within the region of Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and Michigan, Mount Union not only raised more money than any other campus had in its first year, but also more money than any other school in the region raised during the 2008-2009 academic year. Some other schools in the region include Miami University (Ohio), Ohio University, Ohio Northern University, Capital University, Marietta College and Michigan State University.
“More than 200 students on campus worked hard to raise money for such a great cause,” said Jesse Douglas, assistant director of student involvement and leadership and staff advisor of Up ‘til Dawn on campus. “We were really excited to win this award.”
Douglas and students Andrew Brown and Adam Hood attended the 2009 St. Jude Collegiate Leadership Seminar from July 31 to August 2. Both Brown and Hood participated in the program last year and now serve on the student executive board for this coming academic year. Brown will serve as the executive director and Hood will serve as the assistant executive director.
“The students and I actually were able to visit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,” said Douglas. “We heard from patients and their families who are directly benefiting from the money we raised, as well as doctors, nurses and many other professionals who research life-saving cures and care for the patients on a daily basis. The impact was incredible.”
Douglas noted that although Mount Union students had a great first year, they are going to try and raise the bar for 2009-2010 and break their current fundraising record. The program will kick off in early November, with a letter writing campaign where students will ask personal friends and family members for donations to St. Jude. There will also be a finale event, which is the celebration and culmination of six months of fundraising activities to benefit the kids of St. Jude. “We are hoping that not only students will participate but faculty, staff and community members,” Douglas added.
