Mount Union College senior Laura Vesco of Uniontown has won an Associated Press Award for best feature reporting.

The Judges' Award for Best Feature Reporting, which was granted by the Ohio Associated Press Broadcasters, was given to Vesco for her five-part series entitled 'The Simple Life,' which aired on the College radio station, WRMU 91.1 FM. Vesco, who is the station director for WRMU, interviewed people from the Amish and Mennonite communities in Holmes County.

'It is important to note that this was a professional competition which included broadcasters from across the state of Ohio,' said Mark Bergmann, manager of WRMU and lecturer in communications at the College.

Vesco said that her interest in the Amish and Mennonite communities began when she was growing up in Tuscarawas County. She began the project by interviewing the author of a pictorial essay of Holmes County. He was able to put her in contact with members of the Amish and Mennonite communities who were willing to be interviewed.

'I was really lucky to get the interviews,' said Vesco. 'It was so interesting to take an in-depth look at their culture and society.'

Vesco is spending her summer break interning at the WEWS Channel 5 television station in Cleveland.
