Mount Union College to Hold Naming Ceremony for Haupt House

April 22, 2010

Known as the President's House since its opening in 2002, Mount Union College's facility at 1304 S. Union Ave. will be officially named the Fred J. Haupt President's House on Friday, May 4 during an official naming ceremony.

The Mount Union Board of Trustees announced the naming in March, honoring one of its most dedicated members, Atty. Fred J. Haupt.

In addition to housing President Richard Giese and his wife Sandra, the house is the site of numerous college and community gatherings throughout the year. It was built in 2001-2002 at the urging of Haupt, who served as chair of the Board of Trustees from 1992-2002 and currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Board.

The house's contractor was Hammond Construction, the architect was Melinda Keith of MAK Design and the interior designer was Marcia Wolff.

'It was Fred Haupt's vision that led to the creation of this wonderful facility,' Lee Ann (Johnson '83) Thorn, chair of the Board of Trustees, said. 'Given Fred's foresight and insistence that the College move forward on this project, coupled with his significant dedication of time and philanthropy, the Board felt this was an appropriate way to honor him.'

During the ceremony, remarks will be offered by Thorn; Dr. Richard F. Giese, president of the College; and Haupt's daughter, Lindsay Haupt Johnson '00. Rev. Dr. Kenneth Chalker '71, a member of the Board of Trustees, will offer both the invocation and benediction.

'The naming of this house is an appropriate tribute to someone who has given so much back to his alma mater,' Dr. Giese said. 'Fred's dedication and leadership have been instrumental in the success and growth of Mount Union College for the past several decades. Sandy and I are honored to be residents of the house that bears Fred's name.'
