August 06, 2013

College FactualALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union has been ranked the top college for the money in the Great Lakes Region by collegefactual.com.

According to College Factual’s website, Best Colleges for the Money identifies those colleges and universities that “offer the best bang for your buck – delivering quality education and economic value.” College Factual compares academic quality with the cost of obtaining an undergraduate degree from each institution to determine the rankings.

“We are thrilled that this ranking reflects the quality education Mount Union provides and the preparation for meaningful careers students receive during their time here,” said University of Mount Union president Richard F. Giese. “We have accomplished alumni all over the world who are making a difference and achieving great success. In addition, our most recent graduates are excelling at an exceptionally high level. In fact, 98% of survey respondents among the Class of 2012 secured full-time, degree-related employment or continuing education or graduate school placement in the college of their choice. We’re very proud of this accomplishment.”

The Great Lakes Region includes the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. Mount Union led the top 10, which also includes Kalamazoo College (Michigan), University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Michigan Technological University, Goshen College (Indiana), Trinity Christian College (Illinois), University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Illinois State University and DePauw University (Indiana).

In Ohio, Mount Union also topped the rankings, followed by Ohio State University, Bowling Green State University, Ohio University, Cedarville University, College of Wooster, Miami University, John Carroll University, Bluffton College and Denison University.

In addition, Mount Union has been ranked by AffordableCollegesOnline.org (ACO) as one of the top schools in Ohio for having the greatest lifetime return on investment (ROI). Mount Union was listed in the top 16% of four-year, private institutions in Ohio, ranking 18th in the state.

The colleges in the study were ranked by ACO based on several criteria including net tuition prices (provided by IPEDS/NCES) and graduates’ average starting salaries and ROI calculation (provided by PayScale).

According to ACO, graduates from schools on the list enjoy the largest earnings gap between non-degree holders over a 30-year span. To be considered as a “High ROI College,” schools have to be fully accredited and be a four-year, degree-granting institution.

The ACO rankings included the ROI calculation provided by payscale.com, which has an annual ranking of its own. To determine ROI, PayScale utilizes its database of 35 million career profiles and analyzes only the bachelor’s degree data from full-time employees to develop the report.

According to PayScale’s rankings, a Mount Union bachelor’s degree provides a 5.2% annual return on the educational investment over 30 years. During that time, Mount Union graduates can expect a net ROI of $493,400 after deducting the cost of earning their diplomas and adjusting for graduation rates.
