Mount Union Plans 171st Baccalaureate Ceremony with Rev. Dr. David MacDonald ‘99

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The University of Mount Union will hold its 171st Baccalaureate service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 13 in the Peterson Field House of the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex (MAAC). This will precede the University’s Commencement Ceremony to be held at 1:30 p.m.  

Reverend Dr. David MacDonald ’98, the current chaplain at Ohio Northern University and an elder in the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church, will give the sermon. MacDonald, a 1999 graduate of Mount Union, was ordained as elder in the East Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church in 2008 and has served churches in Niles, Marshallville, and Edison, Ohio, as well as Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK.  He is also a graduate of the Methodist Theological School in Ohio and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. 

In addition to serving as university chaplain at Ohio Northern, MacDonald coordinates Get Connected ONU, the university’s online volunteer management system. MacDonald and his family attend Shawnee United Methodist Church in Lima, and he is active in the Ada community. MacDonald is a featured author in the new book from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, The Prophetic Voice and Making Peace, and will have an article forthcoming in Presence: A Journal of Spiritual Direction.

Following the Baccalaureate ceremony, Reverend Dr. Kenneth W. Chalker, currently the senior pastor at University Circle United Methodist Church, graduate of Leadership Cleveland, member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Mount Union, and active member of the Board of Trustees of University Circle Inc., will give the 171st Commencement address at 1:30 p.m. in the Peterson Field House of the MAAC.
