Mount Union Plans Events in Honor of September 11

The University of Mount Union, in collaboration with the Alliance community, has planned a variety of events in remembrance of September 11.

Sunday, September 11
Day of Remembrance Schedule of Events
8:15 a.m.
Bell Tower, University of Mount Union
This event is being coordinated by Raider Relief, a student-driven organization at the University of Mount Union. Members of the Mount Union and Alliance communities will walk roughly three to four miles throughout the city, with stops along the route to remember and honor the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2011. During the walk, participants will stop at 8:45 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:43 a.m., 10:05 a.m., 10:10 a.m. and 10:28 a.m. These times signify when the four planes crashed and when the towers collapsed. At each stop, a bell will ring followed by a short narrative of what happened exactly 10 years earlier as well as a moment of silence. For more information, visit or call (330) 356-8022.

Commemoration Ceremony
Memorial Park on State Street
The Commemoration Ceremony will take place at Memorial Park in front of the fire trucks and flag. Those participating in the ceremony include Mount Union’s Army ROTC Program, Mayor Toni Middleton, Alliance Fire Department, Alliance High School Choir, Alliance Police Department and Vietnam Veterans. Additional parking will be available at the VFW and in the College Plaza.

Neighborhood Clean Up

Those interested in participating should meet at Glamorgan Castle. At this time, participants will be divided into groups and sent into the community to complete various projects.

USO Collection
Memorial Park on State Street
Members of Mount Union’s ROTC Program will be collecting travel-sized hygiene products and food for the United Service Organization (USO), which will be distributed to troops in Northeast Ohio. Items requested include deodorant, mouthwash, dental floss, chapstick, shaving cream, eye and ear drops, bug spray, dry powder drink mixes, tea bags, fruit snacks, trail mix, peanuts, batteries, zip lock bags, magazines and disposable cameras, among other travel-sized products.
Also, from Tuesday, September 6 through Saturday, September 17 the Rodman Public Library will have its own “Wall of Names” on display. The library is also collecting items for USO.
