Mount Union Ranked by Washington Monthly

September 27, 2011

Washington Monthly has ranked the University of Mount Union among the top 100 liberal arts colleges and universities in the nation in its 2011 rankings. Mount Union is ranked 98th among the 249 institutions that Washington Monthly included in the category.

According to Washington Monthly’s website, the rankings resulted from a desire to “measure and quantify how well individual colleges and universities were meeting their public obligations in the areas of research, service and social mobility.”

“This ranking is a true testament to our commitment to our mission to prepare students for fulfilling lives, meaningful work and responsible citizenship,” said Dr. Richard F. Giese, president of the University.  “It acknowledges our exceptional efforts in service-learning and community service as well as our commitment to expanding opportunities for student and faculty research as defined by our strategic plan.  It not only confirms our recent successes in this area but also the importance of the direction we are taking for our future.”

In the listing, Mount Union ranked higher than Ohio institutions such as Ohio Wesleyan University, College of Wooster, Hiram College and Wittenberg University.  Topping the list were Berea College, Morehouse College, Bryn Mawr College, Spelman College and Swarthmore College.

“We are extremely pleased to be keeping such good company – to be listed alongside some of the most prestigious liberal arts institutions in the country,” Giese added.

Mount Union has consistently fared well in national rankings, appearing in U.S. News and World Report’s annual listing of the best colleges and universities for 20 consecutive years.  This year, Mount Union was ranked in the top 10 of the Midwest Regional Colleges category.  In addition, Mount Union was recently tapped as one of the best colleges and universities in the nation by Forbes.
