Mount Union Senior Awarded Liggett Stashower Scholarship

September 24, 2007

Jillian Townley, a media studies major at Mount Union, was recently awarded a David L. Stashower Visionary Scholarship in Communications for 2007.

These scholarships are awarded annually by Liggett Stashower (LS) to communications students attending an Ohio college or university. The program honors David Stashower, former LS chairman, who retired from the Cleveland agency in 1997.

Townley said to apply for the scholarship, one had to be majoring in a communication-related field, write a letter explaining why he or she deserved the scholarship, include a recommendation letter, a transcript of grades and an optional writing sample. A selection committee then reviewed all the applications and chose the two winners.

'I thought it was possible to win because I was a well-qualified candidate,' Townley said. 'However, I had no idea how many others were applying and what their qualifications were.'

It was verified Townley was one of the scholarship recipients when Mark Nylander, CEO of Liggett Stashower, called and said she was one of the two winners of David L. Stashower Visionary Scholarships in Communication.

'I had a hard time believing it was real at first,' Townley said. 'I was really shocked. Once the shock wore off, I was really excited and proud and my family was excited as well. I am grateful that I received this honor.'

Townley was presented with her award by David Stashower at a ceremony attended by the agency's employees in the downtown Cleveland office.

Townley recommends to students who are applying for scholarships to do internships or obtain experience in their field of interest.

'This not only helps build your resume, but will help you stand out as well,' Townley said.

She also advises students to have strong relationships with professors so one of them can write a thoughtful recommendation letter.

Townley encourages students to apply for scholarships for which they meet the criteria.

'All you can do is try your best,' Townley said. 'Sometimes good things happen when you least expect it.'
