Mount Union Students Coordinate Fundraising Effort to Benefit Earthquake Victims in Haiti
January 20, 2010
The Mount Union College community has established a fund-raising effort, “Hugs for Haiti,” to help the earthquake victims in Haiti. The project is being co-sponsored by radio stations WDJQ Q92 FM and AM 1310 WDPN.
On Saturday, January 23 and Sunday, January 24, Mount Union students, faculty and staff will be collecting donations from patrons of participating businesses and churches in the Alliance community. Volunteers will be wearing Hugs for Haiti t-shirts and will be easily identified.
Q92’s morning show co-host Charlotte DiFranco will do a live remote from Sheetz in Alliance, located at 236 W. State Street, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 23.
The goal of the fundraising effort is to raise money for the Pierre Garcon Hope Project, established by Pierre Garcon, former Mount Union All-American football standout and current wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts. Money raised through the project will support the Northwest Haiti Christian Mission.
“Following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit on January 12, people have been killed and injured and parts of the country have been destroyed,” said Jay Carpenter, senior biology major and vice president of the Fellowship for Christian Athletes, the organization who proposed the Hugs for Haiti project. “As a football player who personally got to build a friendship with Pierre Garcon, I know that this earthquake has had a big impact on his life. Many members of his family still live in Haiti. Since the earthquake, he has heard from some family members, but not all. For him, this has really been devastating.”
For those who would like to donate to Hugs for Haiti but are unable to visit participating Alliance businesses and churches this weekend, “virtual hugs” can be sent via the Internet at www.q92radio.com. Individuals can donate securely using a credit card by clicking on the “Hugs for Haiti” link and completing the form.
Along with Mount Union, WDJQ Q92 FM and AM 1310 WDPN, Sheetz Stores and Jo-Rae Sales have also provided cash and services to make this event possible.
