Mount Union Students Educate Parkway Elementary Students About the Importance of Health
March 26, 2009
Mount Union College seniors Pierre Garcon, Nate Kmic, Greg Micheli along with junior Cecil Shorts III visited Parkway Elementary School in Alliance to educate students on importance of health, fitness and physical activity.
The quartet know a little something about each of those things …
Garcon was an All-American wide receiver for the Purple Raider football team. He just completed his rookie season with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts and is back at the College finishing his degree.
Kmic, an All-American running back who is college football’s all-time leading rusher and Micheli, an All-American who holds the record as the highest-rated passer in college football history each just finished their senior seasons with the Purple Raiders.
Shorts is a two-sport All-American at Mount Union as both a wide receiver on the football team and just a couple weeks ago in the 55 meter hurdles in track and field.
Each one stressed the importance of eating right, staying active and being the best student they can be as the foundation of everything that they have accomplished.
“Looking back now, I understand that the things I did when I was their age started habits that I still have today,” commented Shorts. “It is important that they (the students) understand how important all these things are to their future.”
The event was the conclusion of a nine-week unit done in Mary Cvelbar’s class in which the students tracked eating habits and activity levels. After the exercise in the gym, students and their special guests went back to the classroom to discuss their findings and ask questions about what to work on, including their grades.
“Everything is connected. Working hard to eat right and be in shape helps you stay sharp in the classroom,” stated Micheli, who is also an Academic All-American. “It is great to see how excited they were about our visit. We enjoyed working with them and answering the questions they asked.”
