Mount Union Students Prepare for Up 'til Dawn Finale Event

May 24, 2010

Mount Union College students are currently preparing for the Up 'til Dawn finale event that will take place February 26, from 8p.m. to midnight in the Hoover-Price Campus Center.

Up 'til Dawn, a student-led, student-run philanthropic fundraising program that was held for the first time at Mount Union in fall 2008, raised more than $74,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  Mount Union students are coming together once again, in hopes of raising even more money for the children and families at St. Jude than they did last year.

In November, nearly 400 people gathered in Campus Grounds and collectively wrote 12,000 letters to family and friends asking for donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

“We are really proud of all the success Up 'til Dawn has had in its two years at Mount Union,” said Jessica Douglas, assistant director of student involvement and leadership, who is the advisor of the Up 'til Dawn student executive board at Mount Union.  “The students have been working hard to make a difference for the children at St. Jude.”

The finale is free and open to Mount Union faculty, staff and students.  Activities will be held all evening including raffles, bingo, card making, karaoke, live music, t-shirt tie-dying and caricatures, among others.  Several other organizations have also volunteered their time and funding to help make this program a success including GAMMA, Mount Union After Hours, the Raider Programming Board and Student Senate.

“The finale is a huge deal because it brings people together and I cannot wait to see how much money we have raised and show others the good we are trying to do by raising awareness for St. Jude’s,” said Jeremy Lookabaugh, a junior political science major who is a member of the student executive board.

St. Jude’s was founded in 1962 by the late entertainer Danny Thomas. Its mission is to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Children from all 50 states and from around the world have been treated by St. Jude’s.

Research findings at St. Jude are shared freely with doctors and scientists all over the world.  The daily operating cost for St. Jude is nearly $1.4 million, which is primarily covered by public contributions.  During the past three years, 84 cents of every dollar received has supported the research and treatment at St. Jude.
