Mount Union Students Spend Spring Break in Texas

ALLIANCE, Ohio—Ten University of Mount Union students involved in the chaplain’s work team recently had the opportunity to spend spring break servicing others in San Antonio, Texas. The team flew from the Akron-Canton Airport to Houston and drove together by van to the city, where they worked with the San Antonio Food Bank.

Mount Union Chaplain Rev. Marty Cashburless says she decided upon the trip after visiting family in Texas this past summer.

After a day of orientation and seeing sights such as the Alamo and Market Square, the team settled down at Haven for Hope Ministries site preparing meals to be delivered to local residents, the YMCA, a detox unit and Meals on Wheels.

The next day was filled with students sorting donations, processing food, doing office work, organizing and completing other tasks in a warehouse.

Wednesday’s work was with the Community Garden, which teaches sustainable gardening practices to interested community members. The team prepared a new area for gardening development as well as raked, weeded, watered plants and relined a garden area.

The last day of the trip consisted of serving meals with the Mobile Pantry, an organization that works with local area agencies to provide food and short-term emergency needs to families and meals for the homeless. The team served 750 people with enough fresh produce, backed goods, juice, water and canned items to last them each a week.

“All the experiences were good because the team interacted with a wide variety of people,” said Cashburless. “This was a good team with exceptional leadership. They worked quite well together and were a great asset to the experience.”

In addition to their duties servicing the community, the group also had the chance to get involved in some recreational activities as well.

“There was great weather all week, so it was warm enough for students to enjoy some extra sunshine during their time off,” said Cashburless. “There are plenty of free activities, and the food is interesting and varied enough that everyone could find something they liked. A particular highlight was the chance to attend a San Antonio Spurs game.”

Cashburless says the team’s preparation before the trip made it easy to do the work that was needed.

“They like the chance to help others while balancing that with some downtime from the challenge of classwork and organizational activities,” she said. “The chance to see a new place and experience a different cultural climate is a plus as well.”

Due to positive feedback from participating students, Cashburless hopes to take another group trip to the Southwest again next year.
