Mount Union Theatre Students to Perform in Actors’ Summit Production
October 07, 2015
ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union students Rachel Irwin and Sarah Slagle will take the stage in Actors’ Summit Theater’s upcoming production of “Quilters.”
Irwin is a senior theatre and communication major of Mentor, Ohio and Slagle is a sophomore theatre and music major of Fairview Park, Ohio.
“‘Quilters’ is about the lives of an American pioneer woman and her daughters facing life out on the Western Frontier,” said Irwin. “The play is filled with short scenes and musical numbers that tell stories from the book ‘The Quilters: Women and Domestic Art’ by Patricia Cooper and Norma Bradley Allen.”
“Each of the stories in the play is associated with a quilt block,” according to the Actors’ Summit Theater’s website. “By the end of the show, the combined blocks end up as a tribute to the strength, passion, joy and patience that helped make our country a continental power.”
Of course, for this level of performance, both girls must devote serious rehearsal time.
“We're in rehearsal from either 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. or 7 to 10:30 p.m. depending on what needs done that day during the week, Monday through Friday. On Saturdays, we meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” Slagle said.
But Irwin is confident they can handle it all.
“With the help of a very detailed and organized planner, plenty of water and supportive friends and professors, Sarah and I are able to balance out school and rehearsals,” she said.
The show will run from Thursday, October 8 through Sunday, November 1.
“I'm nervous about doing the show justice,” Slagle admits. “A large part of the show is taken from the journals of women who lived on the prairie and made the migration out west, so you really want to share their stories with the most truth you can. It's a beautiful, touching show and I am so honored to be working with such an amazing team of women to bring it to life."
Actors’ Summit Theater is located on the sixth floor of historic Greystone Hall on 103 South High Street in Akron, Ohio. The show times will vary by day. Cost of tickets is $20 for preview, $33 for adults, $28 for seniors (65 and over) and $10 for students under 30 (with ID).
