Mount Union to Host Guest Artist
October 30, 2014
ALLIANCE – The University of Mount Union will welcome world-renowned pianist Kate Boyd to the campus for a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 2 in Presser Recital Hall. The Concert will feature Boyd performing music that spans back to the late 1700s.
Boyd has spent her career traveling around the nation and the world as a concerto soloist and as a guest artist with established chamber music ensembles. In the past two years, she has performed at conferences in Minnesota, Indiana, Florida, Idaho, Michigan, New York, England, Germany and Malaysia.
Boyd’s performances have been featured on CBC and NPR and she has performed several world premieres including James Woodwind’s “Concerto for Piano and Wind Ensemble”with the Butler University Wind Ensemble. Boyd is an associate professor and piano area coordinator at Butler University as well as an Instructor of Piano at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan.
To honor John Cage’s 100th birthday, Boyd devoted much of her time and talent in 2012 to exploring his seminal work to prepare for “Sonatas and Interludes,” a piece she performed throughout the U.S., England, Germany and Malaysia. A solo CD featuring “Sonatas and Interludes” will be released by the Navona label on November 11.
Her solo CD, “Music for the End of Winter,” consisting of previously unrecorded works for solo piano by five living American composers, is available on the Ravello label. Some of her performances have been sponsored by CBC and NPR radio on their broadcasts.
The concert will begin with Boyd performing a three-movement piece by Franz Schubert followed by a piece by Alban Berg and a short intermission. After intermission, Boyd will perform pieces by Frédéric Chopin and Sergei Prokofiev.
Presser Recital Hall is located in Cope Music Hall on the corner of Simpson Street and Union Avenue. For more information, contact Mount Union’s Department of Music at (330) 823-2180.
