Mount Union to Host MLK Keynote Speaker

ALLIANCE, Ohio — In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the University of Mount Union will host keynote speaker Dr. Jo-Ann Lipford Sanders at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23 in Dewald Chapel.
Dr. Lipford Sanders, associate dean and director of master of arts in counseling and professor of counseling at Heidelberg University, will present, “The Declaration of Independence: A Dream Deferred.”
Dr. Lipford Sanders received bachelors and masters degrees from Bowling Green State University and a doctorate from Kent State University in counselor education with a concentration in marriage and family counseling. She has a clinical professional counselor licensure in the state of Ohio, with a clinical supervision endorsement.
She has professional publications in the areas of multicultural counseling practices with children and African American adolescent girls and African American women, women and stress, advocacy and ethical practices of counseling. Influenced by her interest in female adolescent development, Lipford Sanders has designed and implemented various groups for children and adolescents (Honey in the Rock – life preparation for adolescent girls; C.H.I.P.S. – Children Having Incarcerated Parents Succeeding and Kujichagulia, a support group for African American college women).
Dr. Lipford Sanders received the 2011 Heidelberg University’s Ream Paradiso Distinguished Teacher award, 2009 Ohio Counseling Association Distinguished Service award, 2009 Herman J. Peters Award from the Ohio Counseling Association, 2008 Bowling Green State University Accomplished Alumni Award and the Mary Smith Arnold Anti-Oppression Award/Counselors for Social Justice (CSJ) from the American Counseling Association. She sits on several boards for mental health issues and serves as an educational consultant to several public school systems.
