Mount Union Welcomes New Director of Bands

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The University of Mount Union will welcome Dr. Otis French as the new director of bands early this summer.

French has served as the Director of Bands at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania for 12 years where he conducted the marching band, concert band, chamber winds, jazz ensemble and basketball band. He wrote the marching show drill for the university marching band as well as other groups. Additionally, French taught several academic courses in the university’s music curriculum including music theory, conducting and all instrumental lessons. He has also represented the United States both at home and abroad for 24 years as a professional conductor, euphonium soloist and section leader in the Army Music Program. 

“Dr. French brings a wealth of university- and professional-level directing experience to Mount Union,” said Dr. Patricia Draves, vice president of Academic Affairs and dean of the University. “We look forward to having him join our music program and know students will grow musically under his leadership.  Additionally, we know our campus and the community will continue to enjoy our bands and ensemble performances.”

French has extensive experience as a conductor, clinician and adjudicator for marching band, concert band, jazz ensembles, orchestra and choral music. He serves as guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States and is active with numerous professional music organizations.

French holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the University of Maryland, a Master of Music degree in conducting from Indiana University, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Business Administration from Saint Leo College, Saint Leo, FL and an Army Bandmaster Major with a Course Certification as an Army Band Officer from the Navy School of Music, Norfolk, VA.
