Mount Union's Aubree Jones Wins Discus Title

May 25, 2012

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Mount Union senior Aubree Jones (Falconer, N.Y./Falconer) became the first Purple Raider since 1995 to win a national title as she won the discus Thursday at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Claremont, California.

Jones fired off a school-record throw of 153-10 to win the national title in her final collegiate meet. Jones, an All-American in the javelin a year ago, was not alone on the medal platform as her twin sister Anna Jones also had a career-best throw of 144-6 to finish seventh and earn All-American honors.

It was the start of a great day for the Mount Union women.

Junior Mary Mahoney (Ashtabula/St. John-St. Paul) won her heat of the 200 meters to get into the finals with a career-best and school-record time of 24.08.

Mahoney, along with sophomores Taylor Ruffing (Attica/Seneca East) and Lisa Brasdovich (Columbia Station/Columbia) along with freshman Taylor Coghlan (Twinsburg/Twinsburg), ran their best time of the year in the 4x100 meter relay (47.45) and are in the finals in the eighth spot.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Mahoney, freshman Courtney Reese (Cleveland/Cornerstone Christian), junior Daryn Herman (Fairview Park/Fairview) and sophomore Emily Mazzaferri (Canton/GlenOak) made Saturday's final as they finished seventh in the preliminaries with a time of 3:49.02.

With just three events complete on day one, Mount Union stands in second place with 12 points behind Wartburg (Iowa) with 29 points.

Events continue Friday and Saturday.
