Mount Union's Jairod James Wins 174-pound NCAA National Title
March 12, 2018
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Mount Union junior Jairod James claimed the 174-pound title at the 2018 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships Saturday in Public Auditorium.
James scored a 4-1 win over Jon Goetz of Wisconsin-Platteville in his hometown to claim the second-ever individual wrestling title for the Purple Raiders, the first since Dan Bobish won the heavyweight title in 1992. He finished his first season at Mount Union with a 22-1 record.
James was not Mount Union's only All-American as senior Nick Mancini placed fifth at 125 pounds.
Mancini defeated No. 1 seed Clarren Pestano of Central (Iowa) in the fifth place match with a 10-0 major decision to close out his four-year career with a 90-26 record. In his corner for the final match was his father - Boardman High School head coach Dom Mancini.
The duo make 51 All-American awards in school history for Mount Union.
Mount Union tallied 34.5 points to finish 10th in the team standings and it marked the fifth time in school history that the Raiders post a top-10 national finish and first since an eighth place finish in 2011. Second-year head coach Josh Malave was a junior on that 2011 team.
