Teaching Area(s): Computer Science and MPSD

Mount Union has much better computing facilities than other private schools our size. The administration has maintained a commitment to keep our computer labs up to date with equipment and software that allows us to offer course content that applies directly to practices and skills used in the real world.

Hands-On Learning

All majors in the Department of Computer Science participate in team-based software projects as a requirement for graduation. Recent teams have worked with statistical data analysis, online database systems for restaurant reservations and a live-streaming University weather feed. The teams must assign roles in order to attempt to maximize the strengths of each individual member and learn leadership skills in the process.

Students have also assisted Dr. Ken Weber in his research into efficient calculation using extremely large integers, and one student assisted Dr. John Kirchmeyer during his sabbatical leave on the ISETL system for symbolic mathematical calculation.

For the Mobile Device Programming course offered in the Spring 2016 semester, students developed prototype apps for the University’s Department of Biology to automate the recording of animal sounds in a field setting using a smartphone and to provide for easy classification and recall of recordings.
